Session I: Perlmutter: A 2020 Pre-Exascale System Optimized for HPC and Data

NERSC’s mission is to accelerate scientific discovery at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science through high performance computing and data analysis. NERSC supports the largest and most diverse research community of any supercomputing facility within the U.S., providing large-scale, state-of-the-art computing for unclassified research programs in alternative energy sources, environmental science, materials research, astrophysics and other science areas related to DOE’s science mission. This presentation will discuss NERSC’s plans and objectives for its next supercomputer, Perlmutter, a Pre-Exasscale system that will be deployed in late 2020. Perlmutter will be a stepping stone for NERSC users to prepare for Exascale systems that will be deployed within the DOE. In addition, Perlmutter is the first NERSC system designed from the beginning to meet the needs of simulation applications and data-intensive computing.
