In this talk we will reflect the question on how requirements for HPC platforms are changing and consequently influencing design using the brain research community as an example. Based on the analysis of selected science cases we derive both the needs for federating storage resources coupled to HPC systems as well as the need of providing increased performance. We will describe architectural and technical solutions to address these needs, which are currently being implemented.
